Piel is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it's a stones throw away from the south end of Walney Island and Roa Island, in the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. It's owned by the people of Barrow, gifted to them by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1920 as a war memorial.

Southsea Castle's defences were strengthened so that it could continue to protect Portsmouth. In the 19th Century a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. Visitors can still enter the tunnel and see how the Castle would have been defended against invaders.
