Fairfield State Hospital was built with the purpose of allieviating the overpopulation of the existing two Connecticut state hospitals for the insane, Connecticut and Norwich State as well as serving patients in the Southwestern area of the state. Built in the bucolic country hills in Newtown the campus was pleasantly isolated and allowed the acreage of a fully self-sufficent body.
