The patented NORCURE methods of Electrochemical Chloride Removal and Re-alkalization stop rebar corrosion. NORCURE actually removes chloride ions from contaminated concrete and raises the pH of carbonated concrete. Here's how it's done: * Concrete to be treated is first tested to determine the levels and location of chloride contamination and carbonation. * An electrode in the form of a conductive mesh is attached to the structure and embedded in a nontoxic biodegradable electrolyte. * Electrical contacts are established to the attached electrode and to the reinforcing steel. * When an electric field is applied, chloride ions migrate away from the rebar and toward the attached electrode, leaving the concrete. Simultaneously, alkali ions move from the electrolyte into the carbonated concrete thereby raising the pH back to it's original level. * When the process is complete, the alkalinity of the concrete is re-established above the critical value (greater than pH 9.5) and the passive oxide layer has been restored. The rebar is now protected from corrosion. * The electrode and electrolyte are removed leaving a revitalized concrete structure. The NORCURE system eliminates harmful corrosion potentials and high corrosion currents by reducing chloride levels and restoring the passive oxide layer around the reinforcing steel.
